Microbiological Assessment of Automated Teller Machine Keypads as Reservoirs of Potentially Pathogenic Bacteria in Nigerian Cities

Frequently touched public surfaces can serve as reservoirs for microbial contamination and facilitate transmission of potentially pathogenic organisms. Automated teller machine keypads are used daily by large numbers of individuals and may accumulate bacteria from diverse sources. The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on these surfaces could contribute to community transmission of resistant pathogens. Understanding contamination patterns on public-use devices can inform hygiene awareness campaigns and public health interventions. This study seeks to evaluate bacterial contamination and resistance profiles associated with automated teller machine keypads.

Determinants of Childhood Immunization Defaulting Among Caregivers Attending Primary Healthcare Facilities in Rural North-West Nigeria

Childhood immunization remains one of the most effective public health interventions for preventing vaccine-preventable diseases. Despite improvements in immunization coverage across Nigeria, several northern states continue to report suboptimal vaccination uptake and high rates of immunization defaulting. Factors such as vaccine hesitancy, poor healthcare access, low maternal education, cultural beliefs, insecurity, and health system constraints contribute to missed vaccination opportunities. Immunization defaulting increases the risk of disease outbreaks, childhood morbidity, and mortality. Understanding the specific factors influencing caregivers' adherence to vaccination schedules is essential for designing targeted interventions that improve vaccine completion rates. Evidence from rural communities remains limited despite their disproportionate burden of under-immunization. This study seeks to identify determinants of childhood immunization defaulting among caregivers attending primary healthcare facilities in rural North-West Nigeria and generate evidence to support context-specific immunization strategies.

Knowledge, Risk Perception and Acceptance of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Female Undergraduate Students in Nigerian Universities

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality among women in Nigeria. Human papillomavirus vaccination offers a highly effective strategy for reducing the burden of cervical cancer. However, vaccine uptake remains low due to inadequate awareness, misconceptions, cultural concerns, cost barriers, and limited access. Female university students represent an important target population for preventive interventions because they are at an age where vaccination can still provide substantial benefits. Understanding knowledge levels, risk perception, and vaccine acceptance among young women is critical for developing effective awareness campaigns and vaccination programs. This study seeks to evaluate factors influencing acceptance of human papillomavirus vaccination among female undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.

Prevalence and Determinants of Hypertension Awareness, Treatment and Control Among Adults in Semi-Urban Communities of South-South Nigeria

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature mortality globally. In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise due to urbanization, dietary transitions, physical inactivity, and population aging. Despite increasing disease burden, many individuals remain unaware of their hypertensive status, while treatment adherence and blood pressure control remain suboptimal. Poor awareness and inadequate management contribute significantly to preventable complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease. Understanding factors influencing hypertension awareness, treatment uptake, and control is essential for strengthening non-communicable disease interventions. This study seeks to evaluate hypertension awareness, treatment, and control among adults residing in semi-urban communities of South-South Nigeria.

Timeliness and Completeness of Integrated Disease Surveillance Reporting Among Primary Healthcare Facilities in North-East Nigeria

Effective disease surveillance is critical for early detection and response to public health threats. Nigeria's Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response system plays a vital role in monitoring priority diseases and guiding outbreak control measures. However, challenges related to infrastructure, workforce capacity, insecurity, and reporting systems often affect surveillance performance, particularly in underserved regions. Delays and incomplete reporting can compromise outbreak detection and response effectiveness. Despite efforts to strengthen surveillance systems, evidence regarding reporting performance at primary healthcare facilities remains limited in many parts of North-East Nigeria. This study aims to assess the timeliness and completeness of disease surveillance reporting and identify factors influencing reporting performance.

Assessment of Climate Change-Related Heat Exposure and Its Impact on Occupational Health Among Outdoor Workers in Lagos State

Climate change has intensified the frequency and severity of heat-related events globally, with significant implications for occupational health. In Nigeria, outdoor workers such as construction laborers, traffic officers, street vendors, and agricultural workers are increasingly exposed to prolonged periods of extreme heat. Heat exposure can contribute to dehydration, heat stress, reduced productivity, cardiovascular strain, and other adverse health outcomes. Despite growing concerns about climate-related health risks, limited empirical evidence exists regarding occupational heat exposure among vulnerable worker populations in Nigeria. Understanding the magnitude of heat-related health challenges and associated risk factors is essential for developing workplace adaptation strategies and public health policies. This study seeks to assess the impact of climate change-related heat exposure on occupational health among outdoor workers in Lagos State.

Factors Influencing Antenatal Care Initiation During the First Trimester Among Pregnant Women in Semi-Urban Communities of South-East Nigeria

Early initiation of antenatal care is essential for improving maternal and neonatal outcomes through timely detection and management of pregnancy-related complications. However, many pregnant women in Nigeria initiate antenatal care late despite national and international recommendations. Delayed booking limits opportunities for preventive interventions, health education, and risk screening. Socioeconomic status, educational attainment, cultural beliefs, healthcare accessibility, and quality of services may influence antenatal care utilization. Although several studies have examined antenatal attendance, evidence specifically addressing first-trimester initiation remains limited in many semi-urban settings. Understanding factors associated with early antenatal care utilization is important for designing interventions that improve maternal healthcare-seeking behaviour. This study aims to investigate factors influencing first-trimester antenatal care initiation among pregnant women in South-East Nigeria.

Household Air Pollution Exposure and Respiratory Health Outcomes Among Women and Children in Rural Communities of North-Central Nigeria

Household air pollution remains a significant environmental health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal are commonly used for cooking. Exposure to smoke from traditional cooking methods contributes to respiratory infections, chronic respiratory diseases, and adverse health outcomes among women and children who spend considerable time near cooking areas. Despite increasing awareness of environmental health risks, clean cooking technologies remain inaccessible to many households due to economic and infrastructural barriers. Understanding the relationship between household air pollution exposure and respiratory health outcomes is essential for informing interventions aimed at reducing disease burden. This study seeks to evaluate the association between household air pollution and respiratory health outcomes among women and children in rural North-Central Nigeria.

Prevalence and Predictors of Postpartum Depression Among Mothers Receiving Postnatal Care in Urban Secondary Hospitals in South-West Nigeria

Postpartum depression is a major public health concern affecting maternal wellbeing, infant development, and family functioning. In Nigeria, mental health disorders among women are often underdiagnosed due to stigma, poor awareness, and limited integration of mental health services into maternal healthcare. Rapid urbanization, economic pressures, inadequate social support, and pregnancy-related complications may increase vulnerability to postpartum depression among Nigerian mothers. Despite growing recognition of maternal mental health as a critical component of reproductive health, evidence on the prevalence and determinants of postpartum depression remains insufficient in many urban settings. Early identification of at-risk mothers can improve maternal outcomes and inform interventions integrated within routine postnatal care services. This study seeks to assess the prevalence and predictors of postpartum depression among mothers attending postnatal clinics in selected urban secondary hospitals in South-West Nigeria.
