Prevalence and Determinants of Hypertension Awareness, Treatment and Control Among Adults in Semi-Urban Communities of South-South Nigeria

Epidemiology
5 Objectives
5 Research Questions

Background

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature mortality globally. In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise due to urbanization, dietary transitions, physical inactivity, and population aging. Despite increasing disease burden, many individuals remain unaware of their hypertensive status, while treatment adherence and blood pressure control remain suboptimal. Poor awareness and inadequate management contribute significantly to preventable complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease. Understanding factors influencing hypertension awareness, treatment uptake, and control is essential for strengthening non-communicable disease interventions. This study seeks to evaluate hypertension awareness, treatment, and control among adults residing in semi-urban communities of South-South Nigeria.

Research Objectives

  • Determine the prevalence of hypertension among adults.
  • Assess awareness of hypertension status among affected individuals.
  • Evaluate treatment uptake among diagnosed hypertensive patients.
  • Examine factors associated with blood pressure control.
  • Identify predictors of hypertension management outcomes.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of hypertension in the study population?
  • What proportion of hypertensive individuals are aware of their condition?
  • What proportion receive treatment for hypertension?
  • Which factors influence blood pressure control?
  • What factors predict effective hypertension management?

Suggested Methodology

A community-based cross-sectional study will be conducted among adults aged 18 years and above. Participants will be selected through multistage sampling. Blood pressure measurements and structured questionnaires will be used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses will be performed, including logistic regression modeling.

Suggested Sample

500 adults residing in semi-urban communities
