Background

Childhood stunting remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in northern regions where poverty, food insecurity, inadequate healthcare access, and poor sanitation contribute to chronic undernutrition. Stunting has long-term consequences for cognitive development, educational attainment, and economic productivity. Understanding geographical variations and socioeconomic determinants of stunting is essential for designing targeted nutrition interventions and improving child health outcomes. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution and determinants of childhood stunting across selected states in Northern Nigeria.

Research Objectives

  • Determine the prevalence of childhood stunting in selected states.
  • Map the spatial distribution of stunting prevalence.
  • Assess socioeconomic factors associated with stunting.
  • Examine household and environmental determinants of undernutrition.
  • Identify high-risk populations for targeted interventions.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of childhood stunting in the study area?
  • How is stunting geographically distributed?
  • Which socioeconomic factors influence stunting?
  • What household characteristics contribute to undernutrition?
  • Which populations are most vulnerable to stunting?

Suggested Methodology

A secondary data analysis and geospatial epidemiological study will be conducted using demographic and health survey datasets. GIS mapping and regression analyses will be employed to identify determinants and spatial patterns.

Suggested Sample

National or state-level demographic survey datasets
