Background

Aeromonas species are aquatic bacteria capable of causing gastrointestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans. Freshwater fish may serve as reservoirs for pathogenic Aeromonas strains, creating food safety concerns. Certain strains possess virulence factors that enhance their ability to cause disease. Despite increasing fish consumption in Nigeria, limited information exists regarding the prevalence and virulence characteristics of Aeromonas species in retail fish products. This study seeks to investigate the occurrence and pathogenic potential of Aeromonas isolates from freshwater fish.

Research Objectives

  • Determine the prevalence of Aeromonas species in freshwater fish.
  • Identify Aeromonas species recovered from fish samples.
  • Characterize virulence-associated genes among isolates.
  • Assess antimicrobial susceptibility patterns.
  • Evaluate public health risks associated with contaminated fish.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of Aeromonas species in freshwater fish?
  • Which Aeromonas species are commonly isolated?
  • What virulence genes are present among the isolates?
  • What are the antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolates?
  • What public health risks are associated with contaminated fish?

Suggested Methodology

A laboratory-based food microbiology study will be conducted using fish samples obtained from urban markets. Isolation, identification, molecular characterization, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be performed. Statistical analyses will assess prevalence and virulence characteristics.

Suggested Sample

220 freshwater fish samples from urban markets
