Background

Helicobacter pylori infection is highly prevalent in developing countries and is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. The pathogenicity of H. pylori is influenced by virulence genes such as cagA and vacA, which contribute to disease severity and clinical outcomes. Understanding the distribution of virulence-associated genes among local isolates is important for risk stratification and disease management. Despite the burden of H. pylori infection in Nigeria, limited molecular data exist regarding virulence gene profiles among infected patients.

  • Determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori among dyspeptic patients.
  • Detect major virulence genes among H. pylori isolates.
  • Assess the relationship between virulence genes and clinical presentation.
  • Evaluate demographic factors associated with infection.

Suggested Methodology

A hospital-based laboratory study will be conducted among dyspeptic patients undergoing diagnostic evaluation. Gastric biopsy or stool samples will be analyzed using molecular methods for H. pylori detection and virulence gene characterization. Statistical analyses will assess associations between genotypes and clinical outcomes.
