Background

Adequate sleep is essential for physical health, mental wellbeing, cognitive performance, and academic success. However, university students often experience poor sleep quality due to academic demands, excessive screen time, financial stress, irregular schedules, and lifestyle factors. Poor sleep has been linked to anxiety, depression, reduced concentration, impaired academic performance, and increased risk of chronic health conditions. Despite growing awareness of sleep as a public health issue, evidence on sleep quality and its determinants among Nigerian university students remains limited. Understanding factors associated with poor sleep can guide interventions aimed at improving student wellbeing and educational outcomes. This study seeks to assess the prevalence and determinants of poor sleep quality among undergraduate students in public universities in South-West Nigeria.

Research Objectives

  • Determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality among undergraduate students.
  • Assess lifestyle factors associated with sleep quality.
  • Examine the relationship between academic stress and sleep quality.
  • Evaluate the influence of screen time on sleep patterns.
  • Identify predictors of poor sleep quality among students.

Research Questions

  • What is the prevalence of poor sleep quality among undergraduate students?
  • Which lifestyle factors influence sleep quality?
  • How does academic stress affect sleep patterns?
  • What relationship exists between screen time and sleep quality?
  • Which factors predict poor sleep quality?

Suggested Methodology

A cross-sectional study will be conducted among undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling. Data will be collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression analyses will be used to identify determinants of poor sleep quality.

Suggested Sample

500 undergraduate students from public universities
