Background

Campylobacter species are among the leading bacterial causes of gastroenteritis worldwide and are frequently associated with poultry products. Poultry production systems can serve as reservoirs of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter strains, creating significant food safety and public health concerns. The widespread use of antibiotics in poultry farming may contribute to resistance development. Despite increasing poultry consumption in Nigeria, data on the prevalence and resistance characteristics of Campylobacter species remain limited. This study seeks to investigate the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Campylobacter isolates from poultry sources.

Suggested Methodology

A cross-sectional laboratory study will be conducted using poultry cloacal swabs and retail meat samples. Isolation and identification of Campylobacter species will be performed using selective culture methods and biochemical testing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be conducted, and statistical analyses will evaluate prevalence and resistance determinants.
