Occurrence and Antibiotic Resistance Patterns of Salmonella Species Isolated From Ready-to-Eat Street Foods Sold in Urban Markets in Nigeria
Background
Ready-to-eat street foods provide affordable nutrition for millions of people in Nigeria but may serve as vehicles for foodborne pathogens when hygienic standards are inadequate. Salmonella species remain important causes of foodborne illnesses and can lead to significant morbidity. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella strains further complicates treatment and outbreak control efforts. Monitoring the microbiological quality of street-vended foods is essential for protecting public health and improving food safety practices. This study seeks to determine the occurrence and antibiotic resistance profiles of Salmonella species isolated from ready-to-eat foods sold in urban markets.

Suggested Methodology
A laboratory-based descriptive study will be conducted using food samples collected from urban markets. Isolation and identification of Salmonella species will be performed using standard microbiological methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing will be conducted using CLSI guidelines. Statistical analyses will evaluate contamination rates and resistance patterns.
