Background

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae has emerged as a major healthcare-associated pathogen associated with severe infections and treatment failures. These organisms possess enzymes capable of hydrolyzing broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics, limiting therapeutic options. The burden of ESBL-producing organisms continues to increase in Nigerian healthcare facilities, creating challenges for infection control and antimicrobial stewardship. Molecular detection of ESBL genes is essential for surveillance and guiding appropriate treatment strategies. This study seeks to investigate the prevalence and molecular characteristics of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae among hospitalized patients.

Suggested Methodology

Clinical isolates will be obtained from hospitalized patients. Identification will be performed using standard bacteriological techniques. ESBL production will be confirmed phenotypically and characterized using PCR assays targeting ESBL genes. Data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
