Background

Vulvovaginal candidiasis remains one of the most common fungal infections among women of reproductive age. While Candida albicans has traditionally been the predominant pathogen, emerging non-albicans Candida species have increasingly been implicated in clinical infections. These species often exhibit reduced susceptibility to commonly used antifungal agents, complicating treatment outcomes. In Nigeria, recurrent infections and widespread self-medication may contribute to the emergence of antifungal resistance. Molecular characterization of Candida species and evaluation of susceptibility patterns are essential for improving diagnosis and treatment strategies. This study seeks to investigate the species distribution and antifungal susceptibility profiles of Candida isolates from women diagnosed with vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Suggested Methodology

A laboratory-based cross-sectional study will be conducted using high vaginal swab samples collected from women diagnosed with vulvovaginal candidiasis. Isolates will be identified using culture methods and PCR-based molecular techniques. Antifungal susceptibility testing will be performed according to CLSI guidelines. Statistical analyses will evaluate associations between species type, resistance patterns, and clinical characteristics.
