Background

Community health workers play a critical role in extending essential healthcare services to underserved populations. Home visit programs have been implemented in various settings to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes through health education, referral support, and linkage to healthcare facilities. However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of these interventions in rural Northern Nigeria remains limited. Evaluating the influence of home visits on healthcare utilization can provide valuable insights for strengthening community-based health programs and improving maternal and newborn outcomes.

  • What is the level of maternal and newborn health service utilization?
  • How do home visits influence service utilization?
  • How do mothers perceive community health worker services?
  • Which factors predict healthcare utilization?
